Braids Popping Up in 2010

Who’d a thought when braids started showing up this summer that the trend would last into the new year. Runway shows have been sporting long, over the shoulder plaits.  My personal favorite is finding ways to add braiding details into staples like the messy chignon and ponytails.

I put together a last minte tutorial on my favorite braided hairstyle. After you get the hang of it, it’ll take you about 5 mins to do, which makes it excellent for bad hair days. Please excuse the funky camera work!

1. Take large sections and curl your entire head, the curls don’t need to be perfect, they’re used to create movement and a curl and the end which will help you out later on.

2. Section out a chunk of hair 1 inch away from your front hairline.

3. Braid and fasten with a small rubber band, then repeat on the other side.

4. Section out a box at the crown and tease it to create some volume. It’s smarter to go bigger than you want, because you will lose volume later and you can always brush it down.

5. Brush down your bump to desired height.

6. Gather into a low pony tail behind one ear and secure with a rubber band.

7. Grab a 1 inch section from the pony tail. Follow the curl you’ve already made and create a loop, let a little bit of the ends hang out.

8. Secure loop to head with a bobby pin. Continue to pin into a cluster around the base of your ponytail.

8. Secure down any side pieces that are hanging with bobby pins, except for some adorable face framing and you’re done!
